Wicket Keeper
Alex Carey is one of South Australia’s great success stories of recent seasons. As inaugural captain of the GWS Giants on their road towards inclusion in the Australian Football League, Carey appeared to be a talent lost to cricket. But the fade of his Australian Rules career around his 20th birthday left him to fall back on the other sport that had competed for his junior attention, starting a road to becoming Australia's wicketkeeper across multiple formats. Carey had always been highly regarded by South Australia, for whom he turned out at age-group levels in addition to his club side Glenelg. On returning home from Sydney, Carey excelled in Premier Cricket ranks as a batsman, but some struggles at State level led the adaptable Carey to make another switch, from full-time batter to a wicketkeeper-batter down the order. In 2016, he became South Australia's main gloveman and earned strong reviews for his precise footwork, soft hands and promising, elegant batting. Carey’s terrific run deservedly earned him his ODI and T20I debuts in 2018, with the wicketkeeper soon donning the role of vice-captain in both formats, including the 2019 ODI World Cup. His Test call up came in the 2021/22 summer, with a maiden ton coming the following summer at the Boxing Day Test against South Africa. Reliable with the gloves, damaging with the bat and a respected leader on and off the pitch, Carey is a fine cricketer with his best years still ahead of him.
