On Monday, March 10, the iconic Adelaide Oval hosted the annual SACA Community Cricket Awards. The event saw 157 attendees gather to celebrate the 2024/25 season. This year’s event was a resounding success, fostering a spirit of camaraderie and recognition within the community.
Ashley Nicholas from Virginia Cricket Club was named SACA’s Volunteer of the Year. Ashley has been recognised for his outstanding contributions and dedication to community cricket, especially in junior coaching and administrative roles at both club and association levels. He manages all grades of cricket at Virginia, serves as a junior coach, club secretary, and treasurer, and sits on the Para Districts Executive Committee as Junior Vice President. Under his leadership, Virginia Cricket Club has grown from two teams (30 members) in 2018/19 to 13 teams (175 members) in 2024/25, including the successful introduction of women's cricket. His commitment, leadership, and versatility have made a remarkable impact on the club's development and success.
Coromandel Valley Ramblers Cricket Club have been crowned the Community Cricket Club of the Year for the club's ability to exemplify community spirit, combining innovative practices, inclusive values, and sustainable growth. Key initiatives delivered by the club include:
• Junior Development: Reducing fees through the Government Sport Voucher ensureing every child can play cricket without financial barriers
• Community Connection: The Sponsorship Loyalty Program generated over $830,000 in three years, supporting the local economy
• Mental Health Advocacy: The Ashley Bryant Memorial T20 Match and the Ramblers Support Platform promote mental health awareness
• Inclusivity and Growth: Engaging women, girls, and over-50s with programs such as Walking Cricket and female-focused pathways.
Adelaide Nepalese Cricket Association (ANCA) have been named Association of the Year. Among the key initiatives on ANCA's busy calendar include annual blood donations, support for the McGrath Foundation with "Pink Stumps Day," and cricket clinics for people with disabilities. ANCA provides a platform for international students, integrating them into the community and linking them with job opportunities. ANCA proudly boasts teams in women’s, men’s and junior competitions and has grown to now include eight Nepalese cricket clubs, fostering community engagement and sports development.
The Young Leader of the Year Award was awarded to Chloe Mackenzie. Chloe established the first South-East junior girls cricket group to provide young girls with the chance to play and train together, addressing the lack of opportunities for U14 girls who previously played in mixed-gender competitions. She volunteers her time, travels for sessions, and ensures inclusivity and accessibility by using various grounds. Chloe keeps families informed via email newsletters and social media. Her dedication has created a strong, inclusive community for junior girls’ cricket, and she plans to expand her programs further.
Harpers Field at Golden Grove Cricket Club has won this season’s Community Facility Project of the Year Award. The $14.3 million Harpers Field redevelopment has transformed it into a premier sports hub in Adelaide, featuring a 300-square-metre clubroom, unisex changerooms, umpire rooms, scorers’ box, grandstand, gym, meeting room, and more. Club members and the Tea Tree Gully Council worked together on the redesign to boost female participation and foster a welcoming environment.
