South Australia remains top of the WNCL 2024/25 standings following their visit to CitiPower Centre, with the honours shared across the two matches – Victoria winning the first of the two matches on Wednesday by four wickets, and South Australia then squaring the ledger with a five-wicket victory on Friday.
Courtney Webb starred for South Australia across both outings, continuing her fine form this season scoring 110 & 67* across her two innings and was awarded the Player of the Match for her performance on Friday.
After winning the toss and electing the bat in the first match of the two, South Australia had a shaky start losing six wickets in the first 15 overs. Courtney Webb and Jemma Barsby then combined to steady the ship, hitting a record 137 run partnership – the highest ever for the 7th wicket in WNCL history.
Despite the partnership and a late cameo innings from Ella Wilson, adding a further 30 runs to the total, Victoria went on to chase down the 278-run total off the back of a maiden List-A century from Ella Hayward (112*).
On Friday Victoria won the toss and elected to bat. Meg Lanning (89*) survived a close run-out call early in her innings to finish as Victoria’s top scorer, with the hosts being bowled out for 241 in the 46th over. Eleanor Larosa (3-30) and Amanda-Jade Wellington (3-48) kept Victoria’s total within a chasable distance for South Australia.A quick-fire 78-run opening stand between Ellie Johnston (40) and Bridget Patterson (35) put the South Australian’s ahead of the match. Contributions down the order from Penna (27), O’Neil (32), and Wellington (25*) made sure that the total was in reach, with player of the match Courtney Webb (67*) leading the way. A boundary secured the win for South Australia in the 36th over with 5 wickets in hand.
South Australia will enter the New Year at the top of the table, five points clear of second place. The WNCL will return at Adelaide Oval against Queensland Fire on Saturday February 1 and Monday February 3.
