We all know that scorers are a vital part of our cricketing community, but it’s not often we shine the spotlight on them!
Several scorers have celebrated impressive milestones so far this season, including Anthony Rogers who has now scored a remarkable 400 games.
Inspired by the 1988-89 West Indies tour of Australia and subsequent 1989 Ashes success, Anthony started following cricket more closely and even gave playing a go. In 1990 as a 14-year-old he answered an advertisement from Kensington DCC for new scorers, and quickly moved up the ranks from D Grade to A Grade by 1993.
Along with his keen interest in music – playing euphonium, baritone horn and trombone for various community bands – Anthony has been a valued member of Kensington DCC for 33 seasons.
Anthony recalls his most memorable day as a scorer being the 1998-99 B Grade Grand Final against Prospect. As the higher-placed side, under the by-laws at the time Kensington only needed a tie to secure the flag, and after a tight game they were all out for 201, levelling Prospect’s score and snagging the title. Kensington’s rare First/Second/Third Grade premiership treble in 2018-19 is another fond memory.
“What I love most about being a cricket scorer is the feeling that I’m making a valued contribution in a sporting team and club environment where I’d otherwise have been a distant spectator. I’ve seen a lot of outstanding cricket and cricketers over the years and have been surrounded by great people making outstanding contributions both on and off the field. The opportunity to share in the celebration of successes and premierships when they come along has also been very special,” Anthony said.
