Subject to By-Law 1.2(b), a person so nominated will not be admitted as an Honorary Life Member, unless their nomination is approved by Voting Members at the AGM held next after their nomination.”
In August 2024, the Board nominated Ms Jill Kennare for Honorary Life Membership of SACA, in recognition of special and long-term service to SACA and the advancement of the game of cricket, as outlined below:
Jill Kennare was awarded SACA Honorary Membership for Services Rendered in July 2021, and was recently inducted into the South Australian Sport Hall of Fame. This prestigious recognition places her alongside cricket legends such as Karen Rolton and Lyn Fullston.
Jill Kennare, born 16 August 1956 in Glenelg, is a former South Australian and Australian cricketer, who on four occasions captained Australia.
Making her Test debut for Australia against New Zealand in 1979 at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Jill played 12 Test Matches and 19 One Day Internationals for Australia. Jill currently sits second on the number of Test Matches played among living South Australian women, with only Karen Rolton ahead of her on 14.
Jill, alongside Betty Wilson, is the only Australian Woman to make three Test Centuries for her country, two coming against England during Australia’s 1984-85 Ashes series win, the other coming against India during Australia’s tour of the sub-continent in 1984.
Making her One Day International debut at the 1981-82 Women’s World Cup, Jill made a heroic 98 in the tournament’s opening match, setting the tone as Australia swept through the tournament, defeating England by three wickets in the Final to claim their second One Day International World Cup. Jill finished the tournament with a batting average of 43.87, second only to England’s Rachael Heyhoe-Flint on 47.83.
Jill went on to represent Australia 19 times at One Day International level, making two centuries (122 HS) and retiring in 1987 with an average of 46.41.
In 2017, Jill was awarded an Honorary Life Member of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) (Lord’s)) for her services to the game of cricket, joining other SACA Honorary Life Members Karen Rolton, Keith Bradshaw, John Clarke, Creagh O’Connor AM and Ian McLaughlin AO; and SACA Honorary Members – Services Rendered Shelly Nitschke, Greg Chappell, Jason Gillespie and Tim May who have also been bestowed this special honour.
