The Les Favell Foundation was established in October 1988 following a suggestion by a former South Australian Cricket Association president, Phil Ridings. The creation of the foundation was viewed by the SACA as a way of honouring the memory of one of South Australia’s best-loved cricketers who also had a major role in coaching young players.

The major objective of the foundation when it was constituted was to assist in the promotion of young underprivileged cricketers in South Australia in all aspects of cricket education including coaching, training and competition both within South Australia and interstate or overseas and in physical and sports education and education generally. In 1994 the objectives were expanded to include ‘disadvantaged’ cricketers.
